Neuroscience Research Academy

Maxwell Sanders is a student at Haldane High School in Cold Spring, NY. He will graduate high school in 2026. In summer 2025, he participated in the 3-week Neuroscience Research Academy on Penn’s campus.

How did you hear about the Neuroscience Research Academy, and what made it seem like the right fit for you?

I searched for highly niche and specialized neuroscience programs, and when I saw the syllabus for the program and the various topics in the field being covered, I knew I could explore my curiosity even further. Learning under Penn undergraduate and medical school professors appealed to me because I wanted to see how they approached teaching.

Would you say that the summer research academy helped prepare you for a college experience? In what ways?

Coming from a small school, I learned how bigger seminars worked. Having private conversations with Dr. Kelly after lectures enhanced my understanding of the topics we covered, and living independently in the dorms helped me learn how to manage time better!

Tell me about your fellow students at the research academy.

I met some really good friends I am still in contact with. It is very interesting and engaging to meet and befriend people from around the world. I learned a lot more perspectives and gained a better understanding of not just neuroscience but also the world around me.

What's the most interesting or surprising thing you learned during your summer program?

I was fascinated with neuroelectrophysiology. I love chemistry and math and was super interested in how molecular ion channels can control our movements and thoughts. From ion channels to action potentials to new insights, the brain operates at so many intricate levels.

What advice would you give students considering a summer research academy?

I would tell students to go for it if you are passionate or want to learn more about a field you could be potentially interested in. I still have lasting connections from this program that have helped me when applying to college or for advice on life. It was truly an incredible experience.

What comes next for you?

I knew going into this program I would major in neuroscience in college as I have wanted to be a neurosurgeon ever since I can remember. This program solidified that and helped me explore various niche concepts that I want to further investigate in college.
